Parks and Recreation
My partners, Austin Rettig, Riley Huffman and I set out to make a difference in the city of Fishers, Indiana. We partnered with the Fishers parks and recreation to create a greener Fishers; after all it was the Greenest City in America of 2017. Our goal was to implement recycling in several of the parks of Fishers. I was incredibly attracted to this challenge because of my care for the environment, but also the opportunity to get a foot in with the city and make a real difference in this community.
This project started with lots of brainstorming. Our ideas ranged from only paper recycling to a recycled-only art exhibit in the parks. Throughout the span of two months, we met with parks and recreation several times, tweaking our ideas each time to come up with our final project.
In the end, we proposed a "Zero Waste by 2025" initiative. By the year 2025, Fishers' goal is to reduce waste by 90 percent and remain that way. In order for this to be successful, we plan a school club called Keep Fishers Beautiful, which will help create talk about this initiative. On Earth Day of 2018, we plan to launch this initiative on Central Green, the heart of the city. In our parks, we implemented recycling bins that notify the carrier when the cans are full so there can be more efficient pickup times.
I would like to thank the workers at Parks and Recreation, as well as Miss Habig, Mr. Guienen, and Austin and Riley for working with me during this project!
